Cleaning isn't always something people love to do, but it's a necessary duty. We even have to clean our household appliances that clean items for us like our dishwashers as well as our washing machines. In this cleaning tip, she pours Kool-Aid into her washing machine, which sounds crazy, but it's for a very good reason. You may be thinking the same thing as most people, that putting Kool-Aid into your washing machine would wreak havoc on your clothes. You're probably imagining your beautiful light coloured clothes coming out in all sorts of tie dye colour combinations, which is not what you want at all. But not to fear, this cleaning tip is actually meant to prevent stains from getting on your clothes and will not leave any colour in your washing machine. How is that possible? Well, the Kool-Aid is used for it's citric acid, to clean the rust out of the washing machine. When it comes to natural cleaners, citric acid is one of the very best natural cleaning solutions for cleaning rust off of any surface. Citric acid is a naturally occurring solution that can be found on it's own, or in beverage mixes like Kool-Aid. For the most citric acid, choose Kool-Aid with citrus flavours like lemon, orange and lime.

You can also buy pure citric acid in powder form at most grocery stores or health food stores and it's generally pretty affordable. Once you have your drink mix, just pour a quarter of a cup of the mix into your soap compartment of your washing machine. Make sure there are no clothes or any other items inside the washing machine before you start it up. Then, run your washing machine through on a normal cycle with the Kool-Aid in the water. The citric acid in the Kool-Aid works to gently work away at the rust stains, and then the rinse cycle will wash all of the rust and Kool-Aid away, leaving your washing machine sparkling clean and ready for washing more loads of laundry. You can also try other natural cleaning solutions like running vinegar through a wash cycle to get rid of any mold or mildew in your machine. Front loading machines can be especially prone to mold and mildew build up if the door is left closed all the time, which is why they tend to smell after a while. Leaving the door open is a great way to prevent mold and mildew. Rust forms because there is too much moisture and it causes the metal to break down, so making sure that the inside of your machine can dry out properly between loads of laundry is crucial.

Having rust in your laundry machine means you can get rust stains on your clothes, which don't come out very easily. Rust stains are some of the hardest stains to remove but natural cleaners like citric acid are able to remove them. You can use Kool-Aid packets to do so many other things too, including taking rust stains out of concrete and out of your toilet bowl. The best thing is, you may already have some Kool-Aid around your house, or, maybe some citric acid. If not, a small packet of Kool-Aid only costs a dollar and you can find it at any grocery store.
