When Dr. Nereida Sugey Osako Cruz of Cabos San Lucas, Mexico recommenced an urgent C-section birth for an expecting mother due to what she described as "complications in the birth due to a twisted umbilical chord, was she being honest in her assessment for an emergency C-section? Or... was she (like many Mexican doctors) making up a 'false emergency' in order to scare mothers into the more expensive c-section birth. Long time Australian mid-wife and natural birth advocate thinks so.

It is as a matter of fact, that the hospital (H+ hospital) involved this particular incident, in all of it's years since opening, has actually only done a very small handful of natural births (less then half a dozen) with the rest of these births, being c-sections births.

It is known, that during a natural birth, babies develop more diversified microbiomes, and will experience less allergies, less risk of obesity, asthma, and diabetes in childhood and later, and clearly the best choice for a happy healthy baby is a natural birth, so then why is it that an estimated 80% of Mexican babies are born via C-section? This compared to an approximate 30% C-section birth rate in the United States, and 20% in Canada.

The math simply does not add up. So how can this be explained?

To answer this question, one simply needs to follow the money. Doctors are paid more a C-section birth. They take less time. They are easier to plan and they are more convenient for the doctors, certainly not the mothers who then have a painful recovery experience post-surgery during which their breast milk is not ready nor are they physically able to take care of their child as easily as they might have been.

And in our particular case, the recommenced C-section birth resulted in a several week pre-mature baby who that had to go to emergency ICU and racked up over $19,000 in less then a weeks time for emergency care.

$19,000. The doctors scared our poor mother (who wished to remain anonymous) during a time when she was most emotionally vulnerable, being made to fear for her babies life, she agreed to the C-section procedure, which resulted in a premature birth that cost a huge sum in medical bills.

That's one heck of a good deal for the doctors and the hospital. Not so good for that mother or her baby. If this was an isolated incident, it would be easy to dismiss as "better to err on the side of caution". What if the doctor was telling the truth? What if there really was an emergency (despite the opinion of other professionals in the midwife industry). Sure... this could have been the exception to the rule, but what about the other 80% of babies born via C-section in Mexico?

When you look at statistics like this... it's clear, there is a very real problem. In fact, it's not a problem so much as it is a crime being done against mothers and their babies by medical practitioners. Quite literally... a crime. Lying to mothers and causing them to fear for their babies lives is one of the worst sorts of preying upon helpless victims.

If this story makes you angry... we don't blame you. Us too. That's why we are publishing it here. Let's expose this dirty corruption. Let's protect the new babies of the world and the mothers who labor so intensively to bring them into it.
