What does it take to become a skilled rock climber, so we can experience spectacular places like this? First of all, developing a strong core is key – every movement we make during a climb originates from the body’s core. There are many different ways to strengthen our body’s core muscles – like yoga, pilates, or doing the “plank” for several minutes at a time. The best way to do it is through a variety of different exercises that target several muscles at the same time, in much the same way as climbing does.
Don’t forget to stretch! No matter how much we may want just to jump in and start climbing. It is always a good idea to stretch both before and after any kind of workout to keep your muscles and tendons in good, flexible shape – so they’ll be there for you when you need them. It may seem like a chore at the beginning, but you will appreciate it at the end of the day.
When you are climbing, be careful not to grip too hard. Yes it might be a bit scary up there, but we can waste a great deal of energy by holding on more than what’s necessary, as well as allowing ourselves to feel stressed out about our location. Take your time, relax your hands slightly, and breathe deeply – all of these things will help you conserve ample energy to complete your climb and celebrate when you get to the top.
Extensive research has proven a strong mind is just as important as a strong body if you want to be a good climber. A positive attitude is always essential when we embark on a particularly challenging rock face. Consider engaging in some sort of meditation or mental training plan to learn how to clear your mind and focus your attention. The more focussed we are, the more we are able to accomplish – and this applies to far more than just rock climbing.
