Diving with Great Hammerhead Sharks

Find Your Perfect ONLINE JOB

Ever dream of diving with hammerhead sharks but never knew where to find them? Well, this hammerhead hotspot in Bimini is making big waves with shark-lovers and diving enthusiasts from all over the world.

This yet unnamed diving site is directly in front of the Bimini Sands Resort and Marina in South Bimini. Hammerheads gather here at feeding time every day, and have been doing so for over a decade! It all started back in 2003 when Grant Johnson and Katie Grudecki, coworkers at Sharklab, started visiting the site on their time off. Just for fun, they dropped bait into the water to see who might show up, and the hammerheads arrived right on cue. They have been coming ever since.

These days, it's Neal Watson Jr., owner of the Bimini Scuba Center, who feeds the hammerheads and provides divers with a chance to encounter them. Imagine a 700 pound hammerhead coming within arm's length or sailing right over your head! Divers are given a length of PCV pipe to maintain their position just in case it is needed. They may look huge and scary, but generally these sharks are pretty easy to get along with as long as one remains calm.

The hammerheads are so conditioned to feeding time at 2 pm every day between January and April that they're even starting to come when they hear the lunch bell. Hammerheads are generally quite shy and aloof, so when they appear in great numbers like this, it is truly a unique experience.

And sometimes uninvited guests like bull sharks will make an appearance as well, but these visits are not encouraged. The hammerheads are wary of other large sharks, and could easily be driven away by the presence of others.
