Cupcake is basically and clearly a cake, only it is small; designed to serve one person. It is also called fairy cake and patty cake. Now that's a cute name! Fairy cake is both British English and Australian English term while patty cake is Australian English. Well, making of cupcakes are just like baking a cake too. The only difference is that smaller amount and sizes of ingredients are needed. It still depends on the number of people you are going to serve. Icing and other cake decorations can also be applied in it.

Cupcake is first mentioned in 1796 from a cookbook titled American Cookery by Amelia Simmons. In the book, a recipe notation is written: a cake to be baked in small cups. The term 'cupcake' is said to be first mentioned by Eliza Leslie in her cookbook called 'Receipts'. The standard recipes for baking cupcakes are flour, eggs, sugar and butter. They have different variations; some of these are 'cake in a mug', butterfly cake, cake ball, and gourmet cake.
