Most people can't stand the smell of garbage lingering in their kitchen and sometimes people are sure of how to stop the stench. Here is a great article from Food 52 on How to Stop Your Trash from Smelling So Bad. When we keep our garbage inside our homes, which most of us do, we have the annoyance of the nasty smell that emanates from the garbage can in our homes. Kitchen trash cans are always getting messy, and usually will have a pungent odour when you open the lid up. It makes sense that this would happen, especially when the garbage we throw away daily in to these kitchen trash cans is sitting in the dark warmth underneath our sink, or has a lid that is keeping the garbage in a perfect environment to fester. Even the best attempts to keep our garbage cans smelling good are usually not enough to keep the smells at bay. You can use those scented bags as much as you want, but garbage is garbage and it stinks when you open up the lid no matter what you do. And no amount of room spray is ever going to get rid of it either and only covers the smell up.

So what are you to do? There are some great kitchen cleaning tips that recommend to take out your garbage every day, but for some people that is just not practical. Especially if you have a large kitchen trash can. A large kitchen trash can uses much larger bags, which would be very hard to fill up in a day for most people and very wasteful to throw out a bag that is only partially used. You could just ditch the large kitchen trash can all together and swap it out for a smaller one that allows smaller bags, making it easier to take your garbage out every day. If you live somewhere where you have to manage your own garbage until garbage collection comes around, it is great to have an outdoor storage area, even a closed off area of your garage or shed to store garbage in until the garbage collection people come around. Keeping your garbage contained is very important in cities and the country alike so that animals can't get into it and make a mess of your yard.

You also want to make sure you are using high quality trash bags in your kitchen trash cans. These will prevent any leakage from occurring so that all of the waste is contained. Wrapping anything that has a strong odour like tuna cans or cat food cans in its own separate bag can really help to minimize the putrid odours as well. Another wonderful thing to do, which is also great for the environment, is to begin composting. You can compost all of your organic matter, like vegetable and fruit scraps as well as coffee grounds and tea bags, and paper and other organic products. You shouldn't typically compost meat products or anything of that nature as the acidity is too high. Making your own composting pile or bin in your back yard is a wonderful project that gives you amazing fertile soil to work with in your own garden. The compost is a great way to keep the organic matter out of your home, which is what sometimes can smell the worst in your garbage can. It also helps to wash out and wipe down your kitchen trash can and sanitize it with vinegar and baking soda weekly to keep contamination down as well as smell.
