Ikea makes life a little easier for these cats at an Ontario animal shelter. Until recently, cats at the Etobicoke Humane Society in Ontario, Canada would sleep in the cold, and hard floor but no more as furniture giant, IKEA has just donated ten doll beds for the cats at the shelter, along with making a $300 contribution towards the brighter future of the shelter pets. The floors at the Etobicoke shelter were not all that comfortable for the cats to sleep on. So now cats like Catsby and Frankie have comfy beds of their own to curl up on. You will want to take a look at the site to see photos of these adorable felines happily sleeping in their new beds. And while IKEA doesn't sell pet furniture as such, some people discovered that their Duktig Doll Beds are the perfect size for cats. And with the company recently posting a picture of the double decker version of their Duktig Doll Bed with a cat lying on the top bed and a pug dog resting on the bottom one this is sure to be a new and popular trend for animal lovers across the country.

The Etobicoke Humane Society is an independent, all-volunteer run, federally registered charity that has been serving the Greater Toronto Area since 1987. Etobicoke Humane Society does not euthanize any of their animals due to lack of space, and only take in animals for which they have shelter or foster homes. Euthanasia is considered only in the rare instances when a vet determines that to be the only humane alternative. The shelter also does not allow any animal in their care to be used for research. If you would like to adopt any of the cats in the photos you can email the shelter or contact them.

One way that you can help reduce pet homelessness across the country is through spaying or neutering your pet. In every community, in every state across the country, there are homeless animals. In the United States, there are an estimated six to eight million homeless animals that enter animal shelters every year. Barely half of these animals are adopted. And tragically, many of the animals end up being euthanized. These are sweet, healthy pets who would have made great companions. The number of homeless animals varies from state to state. To help avoid the unnecessary euthanizing of otherwise healthy pets, it is important to spay and neuter pets; it is a 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.

A USA Today article from May 2013 cites that pets who live in the states with the highest rates of spaying/neutering also live the longest. And according to the report, neutered male dogs live about 18 percent longer than un-neutered male dogs, and spayed female dogs live 23 percent longer than unspayed female dogs. The news article goes on to say that in the state of Mississippi, the lowest-ranking state for pet longevity, that 44 percent of the dogs are not neutered or spayed. Part of the reduced lifespan of these unaltered pets can be attributed to their increased urge to roam, exposing them to fights with other animals, getting struck by vehicles, and other mishaps.
