Find Your Perfect ONLINE JOB

Onions!! Are you ones of those people that suffer from cutting an onion? Or is it just me that seems to struggle?

I've tried wearing goggles, sunglasses, my snorkel gear, closing my eyes whilst attempting to slice the vegetable, and running the onion under water even...... And I have also heard you can bite on a match or paper towel and that the onion fumes will go there instead of your eyes. Even though these efforts all work, I'm curious to see what other options I have. My mother says her contacts protect her eyes fairly well when cutting an onion however what do you do if you aren't wearing them? Surely there is a better way.

Onions, like garlic, are members of the Allium family; onion(Allium cepa) (Latin 'cepa' = onion). This is also known as the bulb onion or common onion, and is a vegetable that is most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. As well as garlic, onions both are rich in sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their pungent odors and for many of their health-promoting effects. Such varieties of allyl sulfides are found in onion like the four main diallyl sulfides: DMS (diallyl monosulfide), DDS (diallyl disulfide), DTS (diallyl trisulfide), and DTTS (diallyl tetrasulfide).

So the winning formula-The part of the onion that causes tears is the root; the bulb and gas that gather inside it. Yes it seems riduclous, but is has been shown that if you get rid of that part of the onion then you wont be left with any onion fights or dramas. Another really useful tip that I have found is to put the onion in the freezer for 20 minutes prior to cutting. This helps greatly in your reduces tears and stinging eyes.

So my passion of cooking will continue Passing on traditions from my mother and grandmother. The days of slaving over a hot stove as still going.........and a lot of the crying has probably been from onions. But let is be said Mr Onion... I will not let a little onion challenge me in the kitchen any longer!!
