Our world can be a pretty overwhelming place especially for those who are highly sensitive like highly empathic people. The awareness of a highly empathic person is dialled up more, and they can sense energy and emotions very easily. Sometimes it gets to the point where it's very overwhelming. So if you're a highly empathic person, this information from Aletheia Luna over at Loner Wolf could help you out a bit. She teaches highly empathic or sensitive people an empowering technique that will allow them to take care of themselves better in overwhelming or stressful situations. She says that we should start out by surrendering, then observe, accept and release which is abbreviated to SOAR. SHe created the technique based on Zen philosophy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and it's meant to be practiced as a way of life. So it may take you a little while before you get it, but it could really help you out, so it doesn't hurt to try.

This technique also allows you to be able to take control of your emotions which will help you calm down and process how you feel. With her technique, you start out by surrendering, which is to take a few deep breaths in and out. Notice what feels tight in your body and if there is any constriction. Then you can observe what you're feeling and allow yourself to feel the emotions as they are coming up without judgement. Listen to what they are trying to tell you and treat them as you would a small child. The next step is to accept the emotions you're feeling and welcome them in. Once you feel them fully, you can begin to release them which is the final step of this process. It also helps to go through the steps a few times as needed to honour your emotions and take time to process them. It would be great to set aside some time each day to do this practice of tuning into yourself and how you feel. This is a self-soothing process that so often we aren't taught as we are growing up, but now that you are older, you can learn how to soothe your emotions. This practice has the power to change your energy and awareness of the world around you and how you respond.

It's also great to learn how to set boundaries as a highly empathic person so that you can protect your energy. If you're used to saying yes to everything out of people pleasing habits but it stresses you out and overwhelms you, then try to start saying No when you want to. If you're feeling too tired to go out to that party, then just say no thank you to your friends and leave it at that. You don't even need to make up an excuse as so many of us often do. As a highly empathic and sensitive person, it's very important that you take some time out for yourself to do the things you love and the things that bring you peace. So for you that could look like going out for a walk or a run, or you could even enjoy going shopping or to the bookstore. Do things for yourself and spend time alone to recharge your batteries as needed. This technique should be very helpful though so try it out. Make sure you read the entire post from Lone Wolf for the step by step directions and also a helpful example of someone doing this exercise themselves.
