Anyway, in some places, the food is informally called 'tots', removing the word 'tater' from it.

Tater tots are born when the founders of Ore-Ida, F. Nephi Grigg and Golden Grigg are trying to think what to do with the leftover slivers of cut-up potatoes. As stated in Wikipedia, the Griggs chopped up the slivers, added flour and seasoning, then pushed the mash through holes and sliced off pieces of the extruded mixture. The product is first offered in stores in 1956 and ] it isn't called 'tater tots' yet. What is it then? It has not named yet, pal. But the founders hold a contest among the employees that would help decide the product name. Clora Lay Orton and a young house mother submit the 'tater tots', which eventually becomes a hit and won the prize.
