It's very easy to do and if you don't have a jarred on in your pantry just whip up your own. For that matter, you can also do a homemade pudding and substitute whipped cream if you wish.

Here are the ingredients for your homemade caramel: 1 1/2 cups sugar,

1/3 cup water, 1 1/4 cups heavy cream, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

To make just place the sugar in a large saucepan, add the water and cook over medium heat bringing to a rolling boil. When it turns golden amber and reaches 350F on a candy thermometer, pour in the cream. Do this carefully as it will bubble up when added to the very hot mixture. Whisk until it all comes together in a sauce texture. Shut off, Stir in the vanilla. Let it cool to room temperature. It will thicken as it cools. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Want to make the pudding from scratch as well? It also is simple as 1-2-3.

Here are the ingredients, 2 1/4 cups whole milkm3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten,1/3 cup granulated sugar,2 Tablespoons cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon salt,3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

This is how to do: In a large saucepan combine the sugar, cornstarch, and salt. While constantly whisking, mix in 1/4 cup of the milk until smooth. Whisk in the egg yolks and remaining milk.

Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, whisking often, until the pudding begins to thicken and just starts to bubble, about 5 to 6 minutes.Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir constantly, stir with a rubber spatula scraping the bottom and sides of the pan, 3 to 5 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter is melted and completely incorporated. Let cool before using in the dessert.
