Vibrator Maker To Pay Millions Over Claims It Secretly Tracked Use

A new adult toy on the market has come with some intriguing settings including an app that is apparently secretly tracking location and use. Standard Innovations is the Canadian manufacturer of the vibrators called We-Vibe. The We-Vibe is able to be connected to an app that the company designed to create a connection that would allow the vibrator to be controlled from a distance through Bluetooth technology. This means that the owner can control their own settings through their own phone, or, their partner can have access to controlling the vibrator to work on various speeds and pulses. There are 10 settings on the app, and the users and their partners can choose the different settings and even create their own personal playlists. There's even an in-app chat, voice, and video to make the connection even more intimate. All you need is a smart phone, either an Apple or Android product, a We-Vibe vibrator and the application installed on both your devices as well as a secure internet or data connection. Most people would think that this would be a great way for couples to keep the flame alive even when they have to be apart for work or travel. But it's the hidden motives that have people shocked and upset, and rightfully so.

Apparently, people had claimed that the app uses the location software to determine the locations of both people and when and how the device was used. Not only would this be an invasion of privacy but a total lack of respect, which could turn off current and potential customers. People were concerned that the app could be used to track the use of the product to gain insight into how their products were used for marketing research. Data that the users never consented to give. The company said that they don't admit to any of the accusations, but they chose to settle the claims instead of going to court. The settlement outlines that most of the users will get about $200 if they choose to make a claim, or $500 if they connected to the app. Some of the claims could get up to $10,000. Each of the vibrators costs $120 - $199 through the company's website, so most people would at least get their money back, but if the company is actually gaining information in this invasive fashion, they should have to stop it.

It's risky enough these days to download certain apps like games or social media apps that you find out track you and collect data for their own analytical purposes, but you would never think that a vibrator company would do such a thing since sexual acts are most often kept private. It can be enticing for people to want to connect through technology and through the internet, but it's probably never going to be as private as you hope. If the companies aren't watching us, it could be hackers for all we know. So when it comes to sexual encounters, it might be best to literally keep things behind closed doors and off the internet if you want to be 100% sure of your privacy. That being said, it's great that these people spoke up for themselves and other customers when they saw some shady business happening. As a customer, you always have the right to share your thoughts and concerns with the company you've purchased something from and to guarantee your confidentiality, safety, and privacy.
