These days people are living longer, and longer lives, with centenarians more common than any other time in history. Have you ever thought about how long you would like to live? You might tell yourself that 80, 90, 100, or 120 years seems like a good age to live to. 50,000,000 years ago most humans died very young. As humans learned how to use the resources around them, people lived longer and longer lives. Today humans are living longer and healthier lives than ever before. But because people are living longer lives, many people spend an ever-increasing part of their lives being sick and in need of care. Most people will die in a hospital bed, which is a depressing thought, but that also might mean watching loved ones become ill too. The good news is that maybe this can be stopped as science makes more and more new discoveries about living healthy lives and what can be done to achieve healthier lives. The most effective way to treat a disease is to prevent it. You can save many more lives if you stop a million people from smoking than coming up with better chemotherapies. Aging is caused by physics and not biology. To make sense of this, think of cars. Parts in cars wear down from constant rubbing and grinding, metal rusts, filters get plugged, and rubber cracks. Human bodies are worn down by trillions of physical processes. Oxygen, solar radiation from the sun, and metabolism. Human bodies have many mechanisms to help repair this damage, but over time they become less effective. As people age, these mechanisms to help repair damage are less effective, and the bones and muscles in their bodies begin to weaken, skin wrinkles, and the immune system becomes weaker. As people get older, they may also lose their memories, and their senses may diminish. There is no such thing as dying of old age, people die because one of their older parts breaks. The older people get, the more damaged and fragile they become, until one or multiple diseases take over and kill them.

Science has made some new, unprecedented discoveries in recent years. For the first time, people are starting to understand the mechanisms of aging and how to manipulate them. Aging is neither mystical nor inevitable, and there is hope that science will make discoveries that may be able to stop or delay it in this lifetime. This does bring up the question whether or not aging should be stopped. The end of aging or life extension makes many people uncomfortable. People are born, are young, become older and than die. This has been the natural order of life for literally all of human history. Getting old should be a good thing. People celebrate certain milestones of getting older such as birthdays and eventually, reach the golden years. Extending your life if you are already 90 years old and in poor health, might extend it somewhat, but the damage at that point will already have been done. Everyone wants to celebrate getting older, but nobody wants to get old. The concept of extending life promises to end diseases and with that the end of a fixed maximum age. It is not known just yet how long that lives can be extended. Currently, the maximum age is about 120 years old. Nobody knows at this point what is possible.
