The domestic dog as we know today is a member of the genus Canis also known as canines that form part of the wolf-like canids and is the most widely abundant carnivore. The domestic dog was the first domesticated species and has been selectively bred over millennia for various behaviors, physical attributes, and sensory capabilities. Dogs long association with humans has led dogs to be uniquely attuned to human behavior. Dogs can also thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other dogs of the canid species. Dogs vary widely in shape, color, and size. Dogs are capable of performing many roles for people, such as herding, hunting, pulling loads, assisting police, protection, and military, companionship and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. Dogs that perform roles are typically known as working dogs. This influence on human society has given them the phrase man's best friend.

The origin of the domestic dog is not completely clear. The domestic dog is a member of the genus Canis or canines that form part of the wolf-like canids and is the most widely abundant carnivore. The closest living relative of the domestic dog is the gray wolf, and there is no evidence of any other canine contributing to its genetic lineage. The domestic dog and the extant gray wolf form two sister clades, with modern wolves not being closely related to the wolves that were originally domesticated. There are archaeological records that show the first undisputed dog remains were buried beside humans more than 14,700 years ago, with disputed remains occurring over 36,000 years ago. These dates imply that the earliest dogs were around in the time of human hunter-gatherers and not that of agriculturists. The dog was the first domesticated species in the world. Where the genetic divergence of the dog and the wolf took place remains controversial, with the most plausible proposals spanning in Western Europe, East Asia, and Central Asia. These facts have been made even more complicated by the new proposal that fits with the available evidence, which says that the initial wolf population split into East and West Eurasian wolves. These wolves were then domesticated independently before going extinct into two distinct dog populations between 14,000 to 6,400 years ago, and then the Western Eurasian dog population was partially and gradually replaced by the East Asian dogs that were brought by humans at least 6,400 years ago. The bond that exists between dogs and humans is special, to say the least.
