Did you know that the use of the marshmallow plant to make desserts dates back to ancient Egypt? At that time, a recipe would call for extracting sap from the plant and mixing it with nuts and honey. Other pre-modern recipes used the pith of the marshmallow plant, instead of the sap. The stem would be peeled back to reveal a soft and spongy pith; that was then boiled in sugar syrup and dried to produce a soft, chewy treat. You could also find the gladiators of ancient Rome, using the marshmallow plant's sap. The sap would be rubbed on the body in preparation for fights.
