You've probably heard of THC and CBD by now, but have you heard about Delta-8 THC? Delta-9 THC is what most people know as the psychoactive component of cannabis, but Delta-8 THC is closely related. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids in cannabis plants. There is also CBD which is known as Cannabidiol and Cannabinol which is also known as CBN which are not psychoactive but still have healing properties and calming effects. Delta-8-THC is a compound that is very similar to Delta-9 THC but it only makes up 1% of dried cannabis flower. Unlike CBD and CBN, Delta-8 THC is psychoactive but less psychoactive than Delta-9 THC. It also connects to the same parts of the brain as Delta-9 but it also has a connection with the immune system which is what makes it special. In studies, it's been shown to boost a chemical associated with learning and memory called acetylcholine. Lower amounts of this chemical have been shown to be associated with Alzheimer's disease and memory issues. While studies on Delta-8 THC are pretty new and there isn't a lot of information on the health benefits of it, it's been shown promise in helping with anxiety, increasing appetite, relieving pain, and relief of nausea.

From the research that's already been done, researchers say that it could also be helpful in alternative therapies for asthma and septic shock. Dr. Rapheal Mechulam who is an award-winning cannabis researcher gave Delta-8 THC to children who had cancer and were undergoing chemotherapy. Since chemotherapy can cause nausea and vomiting in patients, they wanted to see if there was an alternative therapy that would help relieve some of their nausea and vomiting. When the children were given the Delta-8 THC they found their vomiting eased in all cases. Don't worry, the psychoactive effects of the Delta-8 TCH were not experienced in children aged 3 to 13 and it's been shown that only adults experience the psychoactive effects. So moving forward, there are already two US patents with delta-8 THC in them for treatment of nausea and vomiting. Apparently, Delta-8 THC can also be beneficial for increasing appetite another thing that seems to go when getting chemotherapy. Since Delta-8 THC is so difficult to extract, it's not as available as strains of marijuana with other types of cannabinoids in it. So it might be something that we have to wait on to hit the markets.

When it comes to other health benefits of marijuana, CBD can also be effective in reducing nausea and vomiting and THC strains of marijuana can be helpful in increasing appetite. THC may not be the best choice for calming those who have nervousness or anxiety, but it could be beneficial for those who experience depression and want some relief. Most places in the US and Canada have approved medicinal marijuana for alternative therapies including being a part of a cancer treatment plan. There are only several states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use meaning that you don't need a special card or a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana legally. All you need to be is of legal age in that area to use marijuana. People can experience the health benefits of both cbd and thc by either smoking the flowers of the plant, drinking the beneficial parts of the plant in a tea, coffee or even beer and eating it in edibles. Most dispenseries will be able to tell you how much THC or CBD is in each of the products and what types of effects it will have on a person.
