Imagine the headline: 'Aliens stopped WWII nuclear battle between US and Russia' claims sixth man on Moon. You'd think the 'sixth man on the moon' was a little crazy, wouldn't you? Or, would you believe what this astronaut has to say about extraterrestrial existence?

Edgar Mitchell, now 84, was the sixth man on the moon during the 1971 Apollo 14 mission. He is an astronaut turned die-hard alien believer who has regularly spoken of his belief that extraterrestrials visit earth. Mitchell claims aliens visited earth during the 1947 Roswell incident and that they shot down test nuclear missiles to prevent an all-out nuclear battle between the United States and Russia, claiming they wanted to know about the earth's military capabilities.

In 1947 a United States Air Force surveillance balloon allegedly crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. For some reason, this crash prompted claims alleging the crash was actually of an extraterrestrial spaceship. After a spike in interest, it was the military that reported the crash was only a conventional weather balloon, however 'ufologists' began propagating a wide variety of elaborate conspiracy theories claiming that spacecraft had crash-landed and the alien occupants had been recovered by the military who then engaged in a cover-up while the remains were whisked away to Area 51. In the 1990's the US military published reports disclosing the true nature of the crashed balloon (named Project Mogul), but despite this official standing Roswell continues to be of interest and conspiracy theories about the incident persist even today.

But what is really interesting is that Mitchell believes aliens prevented a nuclear war. He states My own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs have been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth. He also claims that other officers from bases on the Pacific coast had told him their missiles were frequently shot down (by alien spacecraft, allegedly). And, while the aliens appear to desire peace on earth (don't we all?), he added that their technology is so much more advanced that the Earth as we know it would be doomed if the aliens decided to turn hostile. For the record, Mitchell also claims that aliens look like the 'traditional' little grey men often spoken of and depicted in recounts of alien exposure.

A gentleman by the name of Nick Pope, who investigated UFO sightings for the British Ministry of Defense until 2009 claims that governments have sometimes secretly promoted belief in UFOs because if someone saw a classified military prototype aircraft or drone, it's actually better for the department of defense to have it reported as a flying saucer or alien spacecraft than recognized for what it actually is. He goes on to state that just because a UFO sighting is unexplained, doesn't necessarily mean it's 'extraterrestrial'. So... what do you think? Is the astronaut who walked on the moon speaking truth, or absolute nonsense? Do we owe our current existence to aliens to muddled in earthy affairs?
