What is one of the most unhealthy foods in the world? After catching a glimpse of the photo you see here, you might be surprised that the pink sludge you see pouring out of the tube is, in fact, hot dog meat that's being processed to go into casings. Hot dogs are an American icon, so it's no surprise that they are a go-to food for many people. You've probably even eaten your fair share of hot dogs over the course of your lifetime. The thing is, most people probably don't even know how they're made and that they are one of the most unhealthy foods out there. If you're into eating healthy and looking out for your health and wellbeing, you're going to want to learn more about hot dogs and find out exactly how they're made and where they come from. Under the illusion of the fun and convenience that surrounds the hot dog, lies a whole host of shocking ingredients. Some of these ingredients will have you rethinking buying these ever again. Most of the mass-produced hot dogs contain a long list of additives including animal fat, syrup and monosodium glutamate. The freaky thing is, a lot of the ingredients aren't even listed on the hot dog packaging label which makes it hard to know exactly what you're eating and if it's going to be good for your health and wellbeing.

Hot dogs are far from being a healthy food. They are meant to be mass produced as cheaply as possible. The generic hot dogs you purchase at the store generally consist of meat and meat bi-products, cast-offs from better cuts of meat. Your hot dogs can contain ground-up fat, sinew, cartilage, bone, hair, skin, feet, and even feathers, but we wouldn't know any better because it's all ground up into a pink pulp. The syrups and MSG tend to mask the unsavoury flavours, so you only taste salt and sweetness which are the flavours people crave the most. In the video from How It's Made, you'll learn a little bit about how hot dogs came to be and footage of how they're made, so you know how your hot dogs came to be. You'll see all of the meat parts being ground up in a machine and then pressed through another machine to make a paste. Then, the hot dogs are put into cellulose tubing, and then flavouring is added while they cook and the casing is steamed off the hot dog so it can be packaged with the rest.

This is a very long process to go through to make a simple sausage. After watching this video, you may not really want to indulge in hot dogs any longer, but fortunately, there are so many other foods out there these days. Look for organic and even locally made hot dogs, sausages, and wieners if possible. You can also try out a meatless option and opt for a vegan or vegetarian hot dog which would be way better for your health and wellbeing. If you can't find any of these options, why not opt for a beef, chicken, turkey or veggie burger instead? Be sure to make your own at home, or get freash ones from the butcher to avoid any chemicals and unhealthy additives. That way you'll know exactly what's in your food and you can continue eating healthy and feeling good. The eye-opening video comes from the Heartti website where you can watch the full video.
