Death by Chocolate Trifle
Chocolate is one of the most popular food types and flavors in the world and just happens to be my absolute favorite. While there are seemingly endless possibilities for chocolate dessert recipes, one of the best is a chocolate trifle and this Death by Chocolate Trifle recipe is almost sinfully delicious! If you love chocolate, and you love trifle, then this ‘show-stopping’ trifle will definitely hit the spot and curb that chocolate craving.
Chocolate was first cultivated in Mesoamerica, with the earliest evidence of use tracing back to the Mokaya from 1900 BCE. The Maya and Aztecs first made it into a beverage, but today it is included in a vast number of foodstuffs. The term “death by chocolate” is both a marketing term as well as a colloquial descriptive for various dessert recipes featuring chocolate (especially dark chocolate). While it is often cakes referred to by the term, other dessert recipes and even a martini cocktail have garnered the phrase.

To make this rather simple chocolate trifle dessert recipe, you will need a box of devil’s food cake mix, water, vegetable oil and eggs, coffee-flavored liqueur, instant chocolate mousse mix, whipped cream ad Snickers candy bars (you could easily substitute the Snickers candy bars for most other soft/gooey chocolate bar varieties, such as Mars, Reese’s peanut butter cups or whatever your favorite chocolate candy bar happens to be). To start this trifle recipe, you first need to bake the cake – follow the box directions for a no-fail cake. After your cake is cooled, drizzle the liqueur over it and refrigerate for 2-12 hours. Meanwhile, you should prepare the chocolate mousse, as directed on the box and crush your chocolate bar of choice. To assemble, crumble one-fourth to one-third of the cake into the bottom of a very large bowl (I suggest clear glass so you can show-off your beautiful trifle), then add a layer each of chocolate mousse, whipped cream, and crushed candy bar. Repeat until you have 3-4 layers. Your top layer should be whipped cream with a little bit of crushed candy bar for garnish. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.
