A tape measures that size must be used for measuring street blocks rather than the houses themselves.

When it comes to do it yourself home projects, you won't be needing a tape measure that's 600 feet long, a 25 foot one or even a 16 foot one will suffice. Alvin J. Fellows in New Haven, Connecticut was the man to invent the tape measure, even though it didn't result in a sellable product until later on, it was a great start to this handy household tool. It was Hiram A. Farrand who designed the tape measure that would be sold in the 1920s, and that is more like the tape measure we know and use today. The other features of a tape measure include the edge of the metal piece being able to be used as a scribing tool for making a mark for a measurement just incase you don't have a pencil handy. There is also a feature at the bottom of the case of a tape measure that shows you the measurement of the case so you can include that measurement when measuring a corner.
