Back in the day, it was common for young boys to become apprentices of their father, their grand father, or a family relative or friend. They would learn to be a craftsman of all sorts, like a carpenter, mechanic, mason, etc. Nowadays, you need to go to a reputable school or college to learn these skills. Because of the regulations and incurring costs, less people are taking this long route. As a result, craftsmen of all sorts are becoming less and less abundant. However, that does not mean they don't still exist. There are still those who embark on similar apprenticeships, whether it's paid or not, and acquire skills that allow them to create all sorts of beautiful creations. I remember my grand father used to love sitting down to carve a log into a chair, with intricate and ornate decorations that made it a timeless piece that we were proud to have in our home.
